Since its launch in 2017 with the Cadillac CT6, GM's Super Cruise has revolutionized hands-free driving by introducing a responsible assistance system. Unlike competitors, General Motors has implemented geofencing, restricting the system's operation to thoroughly mapped and lidar-scanned highways. Additionally, the technology incorporates a driver-facing infrared camera to ensure that users maintain their focus on the road, a critical requirement for the system's activation. Starting with the Cadillac flagship, GM has expanded Super Cruise to an increasing number of models, recently celebrating a significant achievement: the system has now surpassed one billion miles—equivalent to 1.6 billion kilometers—driven across nearly 750,000 vehicles in the United States and Canada. Rashed Haq, GM’s vice president of autonomous vehicles, noted, "We’re continuing to grow that, both with the new sales and also we have a very high renewal rate." The renewal rate for Super Cruise is impressive, nearing 40% among GM owners, as highlighted by Haq. Initially provided free for the first three years, the service is then linked to an active OnStar subscription. Haq emphasized the system's success, claiming it has passed what he refers to as the 'toothbrush test,' illustrating its consistent use among customers. "Once they use it, they never go back. They continue to use it multiple times a day, just like a toothbrush." The mapped road network has expanded significantly since the system's inception. When Super Cruise was first tested in 2018, it covered over 160,000 miles (approximately 258,000 kilometers); today, it is operational on nearly 700,000 miles (around 1.1 million kilometers) of highways. According to GM’s data, users average 17 miles (about 27 kilometers) and spend approximately 24 minutes per trip utilizing the technology, with more than half of Super Cruise-enabled drivers engaging with the system on a weekly or daily basis.
