In a surprising turn of events, the GMC Hummer EV has outsold Tesla's Cybertruck in the second quarter, showcasing a significant decline in Cybertruck sales since last year's peak. According to recent data from Cox Automotive, Tesla managed to sell only 4,306 Cybertrucks during this period, falling short of the 4,508 Hummer units sold by GMC. Competing for the top spot, Ford's F-150 Lightning reclaimed its title as the best-selling electric truck in the U.S. for the first quarter, with 5,842 units sold. However, this figure marks the lowest quarterly total for Ford in over a year, indicating that even leading models are facing challenges in the current market. It's worth noting that the sales figures for the GMC Hummer encompass both the pickup and its SUV variant, which closely resembles a truck rather than a traditional SUV. Meanwhile, Rivian's R1T has also experienced a downturn, with sales dropping from 3,309 units last year to just 1,752 last quarter. The Cybertruck, once projected to be a major player in the electric vehicle arena, has seen a steep decline in popularity. After delivering the first units in December 2023 and experiencing a surge to nearly 17,000 sales by the third quarter of 2024, its sales have plummeted significantly. This decline raises questions about the potential impact of Elon Musk's controversial public persona and the Cybertruck's price, which has far exceeded the initial $40,000 expectation set during its announcement in 2019. Tesla had ambitious plans to produce up to 250,000 Cybertrucks annually, but the current situation has left the company with substantial unused production capacity at its Texas facility. As Musk candidly stated, "we dug our own grave with Cybertruck," reflecting the challenges ahead for Tesla in the competitive electric truck market.
