You can finally change the goofy Gmail address you chose years ago

Tomorrow marks a significant milestone for Gmail, as the beloved email service celebrates its 22nd anniversary since its launch on April 1. Over the years, it has drastically reshaped the expectations surrounding free email offerings. However, many users find that the username they selected during the early days of Gmail no longer reflects their identity or preferences. Starting today, Google is allowing users in the United States to change their usernames without the hassle of creating a new account. This feature has been in testing for several months, both domestically and internationally, but it is now being rolled out more broadly across the US. Users can check their account settings to see if the option is available, although it may take some time for it to become accessible to everyone. In the past, numerous users have opted to abandon their old Gmail addresses due to overly personal handles or changes in their names. Now, with this new functionality, there’s no need to let go of your old account. Once the option appears for you, it will allow you to modify the username part of your email—everything before the @gmail.com—giving you the freedom to choose a new identity. However, it’s important to note that Google has placed a restriction on this feature: users can only change their email addresses once every 12 months. While the company has not clarified the reasoning behind this limitation, it is likely aimed at reducing spam and maintaining account security.
