Gmail debuts a personalized AI Inbox, AI Overviews in search, and more

Google has announced a groundbreaking AI Inbox for Gmail, which aims to offer users a tailored summary of their tasks and crucial updates. This new feature, along with AI Overviews in search and a Grammarly-like ‘Proofread’ option, is set to transform how users interact with their emails. The AI Inbox will include two main sections: “Suggested to-dos” and “Topics to catch up on.” The first section highlights priority emails that demand attention, such as reminders for upcoming bills or confirmations needed for prescription deliveries. Meanwhile, the “Topics to catch up on” section will present updates categorized under labels like “Finances” and “Purchases,” allowing users to stay informed about relevant activities. “This is us delivering on Gmail proactively having your back, showing you what you need to do and when you need to do it,” stated Blake Barnes, VP of Product at Google, during a press briefing. He assured users that the traditional inbox will still be accessible, providing a toggle feature to switch between the classic view and the new AI Inbox. Currently, Google is testing the AI Inbox with a select group of users before a broader rollout in the upcoming months. In addition to this feature, the AI Overviews in Gmail search will allow users to pose natural language questions to quickly retrieve information, eliminating the need for keyword searches. For instance, users can inquire about past service quotes directly, receiving an AI-generated overview that highlights the necessary details. Blake elaborated on this feature, explaining, “We scour every email in your inbox, and we give you the answer to your questions right at the top.” This capability relies exclusively on the user’s personal emails to generate responses, ensuring privacy and tailored interactions. Furthermore, a new Proofread feature is set to assist users in refining their writing by offering suggestions for clarity and structure. This tool will highlight areas for improvement, such as word choice and sentence complexity, effectively competing with existing proofreading services. While these advanced features are initially available to paid subscribers of Google AI Pro and Ultra, Google has also announced that tools like “Help Me Write,” AI Overviews for threaded emails, and “Suggested Replies” will soon be accessible to all users, significantly enhancing the Gmail experience for everyone.
