AI and hands-free driving are coming to GM’s vehicles

General Motors recently showcased its cutting-edge initiatives at a special event, revealing exciting advancements that are set to transform the driving experience. Among the noteworthy developments is the introduction of the Cadillac Escalade IQ, which is expected to feature a groundbreaking 'Level 3' conditional automated driving system by 2028. This innovative technology will allow for a 'hands off, eyes off' driving experience, integrating sophisticated digital mapping, lidar sensors, and advanced machine learning capabilities. Designed to operate in controlled environments at speeds up to 80 mph (129 km/h), this system will enable drivers to enjoy activities such as watching movies while the vehicle navigates the highway. In the coming years, GM aims to expand the operational range of this system to encompass a broader array of roads, potentially reducing the need for manual driving in numerous scenarios, unless personal preference dictates otherwise. Mary Barra, the CEO of GM, emphasized the company's commitment to safety during her address to journalists in New York City, stating, "We’re taking a safety-first approach. You’ll see us roll out much, much faster than what we did with Super Cruise." While the initial rollout will be exclusive to the Escalade, GM has plans to extend this technology across its entire vehicle lineup. Barra even encouraged attendees to envision a future where cars intuitively understand their drivers' needs, transport them seamlessly, and perform self-maintenance during idle times.
