General Motors cuts IT jobs by 10% as it shifts focus to AI talent

In a significant shift towards artificial intelligence, General Motors has trimmed its IT workforce by more than 10%, impacting around 600 positions. This strategic move is part of the company's broader effort to align its talent pool with the demands of emerging technologies. According to a report from TechCrunch, the automaker is replacing existing roles with individuals who possess robust backgrounds in AI and related fields. GM emphasized its commitment to evolving its Information Technology organization to better prepare for a future increasingly influenced by AI. To strengthen its IT capabilities, GM is actively recruiting for new positions that focus on AI development, data engineering, analytics, and cloud-based solutions. The company aims to attract talent capable of innovating and developing AI technologies rather than merely utilizing existing AI tools in their tasks. The restructuring in GM’s software division has accelerated since Sterling Anderson took the role of chief product officer in May 2025. Anderson's vision includes integrating the various technology units within GM into a cohesive organization. This transition has led to the departure of several high-profile executives, including Baris Cetinok, Dave Richardson, and Barak Turovsky, GM’s former chief AI officer. Recently, GM has made strategic hires, bringing on Behrad Toghi as the new AI lead, who previously contributed to significant projects at Apple. Additionally, Rashed Haq has been appointed as vice president of autonomous vehicles, reinforcing GM's focus on AI-driven initiatives. This trend of workforce realignment is not isolated to GM. The broader IT sector has faced substantial layoffs, with major companies like Meta, Amazon, and Oracle also downsizing their teams in response to the rapid integration of AI technologies. Cognizant is reportedly planning cuts that could affect over 15,000 employees globally, highlighting the widespread impact of AI on employment across the industry.
