GM announces new NACS and CCS1 adapters, coming next week

In a surprising turn of events for the North American auto industry, major players like Ford and General Motors have shifted gears, opting for the North American Charging Standard (NACS) over the previously favored CCS1 fast-charging plug. This change, which began to unfold in mid-2023, marks a significant evolution in electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. Originally created by Tesla, the NACS utilizes a different plug design while maintaining compatibility with the same electronic communication protocols as CCS. This transition means that non-Tesla electric vehicles will now have access to the vast Tesla Supercharger network, which boasts over 17,000 charging stations. General Motors has already enabled its existing EV drivers to take advantage of these Superchargers, enhancing the road-tripping experience, particularly for Chevrolet Bolt owners. However, the first GM electric vehicle equipped with a native NACS port has yet to hit the market. The upcoming 2026 Cadillac Optiq V will introduce this new standard, followed by the revamped Chevrolet Bolt, which is set to return next year featuring an updated lithium iron phosphate battery to complement the new charging port.
