General Motors is set to implement temporary layoffs at its Wentzville assembly facility in Missouri, primarily due to a shortage of essential parts. A notification sent to employees from plant leadership and local union representatives announced that the layoffs will occur from September 29 to October 19. The Wentzville plant, located roughly 45 minutes west of St. Louis, employs over 4,000 workers who primarily assemble midsize pickup trucks for the Chevrolet and GMC brands, along with full-size vans. However, not all employees will be affected by the layoffs; those in skilled trades, stamping, body shop, final process, and related support roles will continue working during this period. Earlier this month, GM disclosed a reduction in its electric vehicle production plans, despite achieving strong sales in August, where it nearly doubled the number of EVs sold compared to Ford. The company attributed this decision to a decline in demand for electric vehicles, likely influenced by the impending expiration of the IRS clean vehicle tax credit. The current political climate has also played a role, as the administration under President Donald Trump has expressed a clear opposition to electric vehicles, working to eliminate various incentives for both private and commercial buyers. Additionally, recent actions, such as the mass arrest of hundreds of South Korean workers who were establishing a battery factory in Georgia to support Hyundai's nearby electric vehicle manufacturing plant, have further complicated the landscape for electric vehicle production.
