GM has a surprising new role powering the AI boom

In a groundbreaking shift, General Motors (GM) is stepping beyond traditional automaking and venturing into the energy sector by partnering with Redwood Materials, a startup founded by Tesla co-founder JB Straubel. This collaboration marks a significant crossover between the automotive industry and energy infrastructure. As electric vehicle (EV) batteries reach the end of their operational lifespan, GM is taking a proactive approach by recycling these batteries in a deal with Redwood. This initiative will see the repurposed batteries provide energy to AI data centers, a move that highlights the evolving role of automotive technology in supporting energy solutions. Kurt Kelty, GM's vice president of battery, propulsion, and sustainability, emphasized the growing importance of grid-scale batteries, stating, "The market for grid-scale batteries and backup power isn't just expanding; it's becoming essential infrastructure." He pointed out that the rising demand for electricity necessitates swift and cost-effective energy storage solutions manufactured domestically. The partnership also coincides with Redwood's launch of Redwood Energy, which aims to harness GM's EV batteries for a new microgrid in Nevada. This installation is touted as the largest second-life battery project globally, supporting Crusoe, a company that operates AI data centers with high energy demands. As AI technologies escalate the need for reliable power sources, the integration of retired automotive batteries into the energy grid is becoming increasingly vital. This innovative strategy also reflects a broader trend of repurposing aging assets amid global supply chain challenges, including geopolitical pressures and tariff threats. JB Straubel remarked on the significance of this collaboration, noting that GM's batteries—both recycled and new—will enhance Redwood's energy storage systems, delivering a versatile power solution while promoting energy and manufacturing independence in the U.S. With more developments anticipated later this year, GM is positioning itself at the forefront of the transition from electric vehicles to AI-driven energy solutions.
