Who's most optimistic about AI — and who isn't, according to Anthropic

A recent report by Anthropic has unveiled significant differences in attitudes toward artificial intelligence (AI) across the globe. The study, which gathered insights from approximately 81,000 individuals in 159 countries, indicates that optimism about AI is notably higher in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia compared to Western Europe and North America. The findings, released on Wednesday, emphasize that while many respondents see economic benefits from AI, analysts caution that these advantages may not be uniformly distributed. Anthropic's research involved engaging users of its Claude large language model in discussions about their experiences, aspirations, and apprehensions regarding AI technology. Through a specialized tool called Anthropic Interviewer, researchers filtered out irrelevant responses and categorized the sentiments expressed by participants. The results revealed that a significant portion of respondents, about 18.8%, sought to achieve "professional excellence" through AI utilization, with 32% acknowledging that AI significantly enhanced their productivity. Many reported leveraging AI to delegate routine tasks, allowing them to concentrate on more strategic and complex issues. Experts pointed out that the current phase of AI development leans towards automating repetitive and focused tasks. Lian Jye Su, a chief analyst at Omdia, noted that AI is primarily effective for specific, goal-oriented jobs, often found in administrative functions such as human resources and billing. The economic impact of AI appears to favor entrepreneurial individuals, as independent workers—including small business owners—reported experiencing over three times the economic empowerment from AI compared to their salaried counterparts. However, the advent of more advanced AI capabilities, such as Anthropic's Cowork, which can tackle intricate tasks like financial modeling, has raised concerns about job security across various industries. Amid the rapid evolution of AI technologies, fears surrounding job displacement emerged as a prominent worry for 22.3% of survey participants. These concerns were prevalent across different job sectors, highlighting a shared anxiety about the future of work in an AI-driven landscape. One software engineer from the U.S. expressed feelings of becoming an observer rather than a creator in their coding role, reflecting widespread apprehension about potential obsolescence. Despite the mixed sentiments, some analysts view AI as a potential equalizer, enabling access to opportunities for individuals in less developed regions. The report indicated that users from emerging economies expressed 10-12% lower levels of negative sentiment towards AI than their counterparts in wealthier nations. Respondents from Sub-Saharan Africa, in particular, exhibited heightened aspirations for entrepreneurship and financial independence through AI. However, the study’s methodology has drawn scrutiny, as it primarily involved voluntary responses from users who already find value in AI. Lia Raquel Neves, an ethical consultant, pointed out that the sample's makeup could skew perceptions, emphasizing the need for caution in interpreting the results. While those in emerging markets may feel optimistic about AI's potential for economic advancement, the report raises questions about the equitable distribution of AI's benefits. A UN Development Programme report has warned that future AI advancements could exacerbate existing socioeconomic disparities, often favoring wealthier nations with better digital infrastructure. As the landscape of AI continues to evolve, the question of who will ultimately benefit remains uncertain. "The individuals or companies that successfully develop and deploy AI agents for widespread use are likely to emerge as the clear winners," said research director Marc Einstein. Anthropic has yet to comment on the findings of this significant study.
