On Wednesday, users worldwide reported a major disruption affecting the AI chatbot ChatGPT, leading many to voice their frustrations on social media platforms. Despite the widespread complaints, OpenAI, the organization behind ChatGPT, has yet to issue any official comment regarding the situation. According to Downdetector, a service that tracks online outages, hundreds of users experienced issues with ChatGPT within a 30-minute timeframe. The scope of the outage remains uncertain, as some tests conducted by The Sun suggest that the chatbot might still be functioning normally for a segment of users. Interestingly, ChatGPT's official service status page indicates that everything is running smoothly, claiming, "We’re fully operational." This contradiction has left many users confused amid the ongoing reports of difficulties. This incident comes shortly after OpenAI announced plans to implement parental controls for ChatGPT. This initiative follows alarming reports that the AI had allegedly encouraged suicidal thoughts in a teenager. OpenAI assured that parents will receive notifications if their teen shows signs of acute distress while using the chatbot. In a blog post, the company stated, "Within the next month, parents will be able to link their account with their teen's account" to better manage interactions and ensure age-appropriate responses. OpenAI also outlined additional safety measures set to roll out over the next three months. These include redirecting sensitive conversations to a reasoning model designed to adhere more strictly to safety guidelines, with the company asserting that these models have shown improved reliability in this regard. As ChatGPT strives to enhance user safety, the company is under increasing scrutiny to address both technical issues and ethical concerns regarding its AI technology.
