European police email 75,000 people asking them to stop DDoS attacks

In a sweeping initiative, law enforcement agencies from around the world have reached out to over 75,000 individuals suspected of engaging in cybercrime activities associated with DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks. Europol, the European Union's law enforcement agency, unveiled details of this coordinated effort on Thursday, highlighting its focus on dismantling for-hire DDoS services that empower users to launch cyberattacks without any technical expertise or personal infrastructure. This ambitious crackdown, named Operation PowerOFF, involved the strategic dispatch of warning emails and letters to those suspected of employing these illicit services. The operation was bolstered by crucial intelligence gathered from raids and the confiscation of servers linked to these DDoS-for-hire platforms, which enabled police to identify and target their registered users. The results of this operation were significant, leading to four arrests, the seizure of 53 domains, and the execution of 24 search warrants. DDoS attacks continue to pose a substantial threat due to their disruptive capabilities and the relative ease with which they can be executed, particularly through these for-hire services. Notably, last year, Cloudflare reported successfully mitigating a record-breaking DDoS attack that peaked at an astonishing 29.7 terabits per second. Additionally, the FBI has been increasingly active in similar operations aimed at curtailing DDoS-for-hire services in recent years.
