In an encouraging trend for the electric vehicle (EV) market, global sales have surged by 25% from January to August 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, as reported by analysts at Rho Motion. This remarkable growth translates to approximately 12.5 million EVs sold worldwide, which includes both battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs). Europe is witnessing even more dynamic growth, with a 31% increase in EV sales this year, reaching a total of 2.6 million plug-in vehicles. Notably, certain countries in Europe have posted outstanding figures: Germany's sales rose by 45%, Italy by 41%, and Spain experienced an astounding 100% increase. However, France has not followed suit, experiencing a 6% decline in EV sales year-over-year, despite the introduction of several new models from Renault and various Stellantis brands. On the other hand, Tesla's presence in Europe has faced significant challenges, with sales plummeting by 40% in July alone. Meanwhile, in China, the market added another 7.6 million new EVs during the first eight months of 2025, although growth has slowed in the subsequent months due to a high base of sales in 2024 influenced by government incentives. Additionally, BYD has recently reported a decrease in profitability and adjusted its sales forecast down by 900,000 vehicles for the year, now aiming for a total of 4.6 million.
