Musk's X faces probes in EU, India, Malaysia after Grok let users create explicit images of minors

Elon Musk's social media platform, X, is currently under scrutiny from regulatory bodies in Europe, India, and Malaysia due to alarming reports that its Grok chatbot has allowed users to generate and share explicit AI-created images featuring children and women. The British media regulator Ofcom has also requested information from X regarding these serious allegations. In Brazil, a member of parliament has urged the country’s federal prosecutor and data protection authority to halt the use of Grok until a thorough investigation is conducted. This wave of investigations comes in the wake of increasing instances of nonconsensual intimate images being created and disseminated through Grok, which can produce outputs based on user prompts using real people's photos or videos. Recent updates to Grok Imagine have made it easier for users to generate images from text prompts, raising concerns among safety experts and tech observers about the rise of exploitative content on the platform. Despite the backlash, Musk's response was to share various Grok-generated images, even posting one of himself in a bikini, accompanied by laughing emojis, which some interpreted as dismissive of the serious issues at hand. At a press conference, European Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that the authority is "very seriously looking into this matter." He condemned the explicit content generated by Grok, asserting, "This is not 'spicy.' This is illegal. This is appalling. This is disgusting. This is how we see it, and this has no place in Europe." India's Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology has mandated X to conduct a comprehensive review of Grok's operations, setting a compliance deadline of January 5. Meanwhile, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has announced its investigation into X and plans to summon company representatives for discussions. In the United States, the National Center on Sexual Exploitation (NCOSE) has called for an investigation by the Department of Justice and the Federal Trade Commission. NCOSE's chief legal officer highlighted the existing federal laws against child sexual abuse materials (CSAM), which might extend to virtually created content that depicts identifiable minors in sexual situations. Musk's company has publicly stated its commitment to combating illegal content on X, pledging to remove such materials and cooperate with law enforcement as necessary. Musk reiterated that those who utilize Grok for illegal content creation would face the same repercussions as those who directly upload such material. Despite the controversy, the traffic for X appears unaffected. Apptopia reports that daily downloads of Grok have surged by 54% recently, while downloads of the X app have seen a 25% increase over the last few days. This situation raises critical questions about the responsibilities of tech companies when it comes to safeguarding users from harmful content generated by AI.
