In a significant shift, GitHub has transitioned its Copilot service from a request-based billing system to a usage-based pricing model, effective today. This change has taken many users by surprise, as they come to terms with the rapid depletion of their AI credit allowances. Social media platforms and forums are buzzing with Copilot users who are expressing their shock at how quickly their usual usage patterns are exhausting their monthly AI credits. Some individuals report that they can consume their entire monthly quota within just a few hours of use, a stark contrast to the previous billing system where users were allocated a set number of requests based on their subscription tier. Previously, users could conduct a simple chat question or engage in extensive coding sessions without significant financial repercussions, as both would count towards their request limits. GitHub acknowledged that this traditional model forced them to absorb the rising costs associated with AI inference. However, under the new pricing structure, users now receive a monthly allocation of AI credits, with each credit valued at $0.01. The monthly credit allowance varies by subscription plan: the $10 Pro plan offers 1,500 credits, equating to $15 worth; the $39 Pro+ plan provides 7,000 credits, valued at $70; while the $100 Copilot Max plan includes a hefty 20,000 credits, translating to $200. This new model has led many to calculate that their previous usage could have resulted in bills soaring into the thousands of dollars, prompting a reckoning for regular users of GitHub Copilot.
