GitHub Copilot, the AI-powered coding assistant from Microsoft-owned GitHub, has officially surpassed 20 million users, as revealed by CEO Satya Nadella during the company's recent earnings call. This figure signifies all-time users, with a notable five million individuals adopting the tool in just the last three months. Back in April, GitHub reported that Copilot had reached 15 million users, showcasing rapid growth. While the total user count is impressive, Microsoft and GitHub have not disclosed how many of these users engage with the tool on a daily or monthly basis, which likely reflects a smaller active user base. However, GitHub Copilot’s popularity is underscored by its significant adoption rate among major corporations, with approximately 90% of Fortune 100 companies using the tool. Additionally, the enterprise market for Copilot has seen a growth of around 75% compared to the previous quarter. As AI coding tools gain traction, they represent one of the few segments within the AI landscape that is generating substantial revenue. Nadella noted that GitHub Copilot has already outperformed the total business size of GitHub at the time of Microsoft’s acquisition in 2018. The growth trend for Copilot appears robust, continuing to climb over the past year. In contrast to widely used AI chatbots like ChatGPT and Gemini, which boast hundreds of millions of users, GitHub Copilot’s user base remains relatively small. Nevertheless, software engineers and their employers are increasingly inclined to invest in AI tools tailored for coding tasks. With Microsoft’s extensive enterprise clientele and GitHub’s developer ecosystem, Copilot is strategically positioned to lead this burgeoning market. Competing against GitHub Copilot is Cursor, another AI coding platform that is making strides in the enterprise sector. Cursor reportedly had over a million daily users as of March, and its annual recurring revenue has skyrocketed to more than $500 million, indicating a surge in daily user engagement. As both GitHub Copilot and Cursor evolve, they are increasingly merging their functionalities, introducing AI agents designed to review code and identify human errors. GitHub is also witnessing significant progress with its AI coding agents, as mentioned by Nadella. Beyond Cursor, other well-funded competitors are eyeing a share of the enterprise AI coding market. This includes tech giants like Google, which has acquired key personnel from AI coding startup Windsurf, as well as Cognition, which has integrated Windsurf’s team into its operations. OpenAI and Anthropic are also developing their own coding solutions powered by their proprietary AI models, Codex and Claude Code, respectively. The competitive landscape for AI coding tools is rapidly intensifying, signifying a pivotal moment in the industry.
