GitHub CEO says the 'smartest' companies will hire more software engineers — not less — as AI develops

In a recent discussion, GitHub's CEO Thomas Dohmke emphasized that the most successful companies in the age of AI will focus on hiring more software engineers rather than cutting back. During his appearance on "The Silicon Valley Girl Podcast," Dohmke stated, "The companies that are the smartest are going to hire more developers. Because if you 10x a single developer, then 10 developers can do 100x." Dohmke highlighted how AI has transformed the learning landscape for aspiring coders, making programming more accessible and simplifying the processes for seasoned professionals. He noted, "When we say AI is democratizing access, that's what we mean. Everyone who wants to learn it can learn it." However, he's quick to point out that while more individuals may gain coding skills for personal projects, the business sector will still demand a deeper understanding of coding to effectively leverage AI. "I think the idea that AI without any coding skills lets you just build a billion-dollar business is mistaken," he remarked, stressing that if it were that easy, everyone would succeed. Despite a trend in the tech industry towards hiring freezes and layoffs amidst the AI boom, Dohmke believes this is a temporary phase. He anticipates that companies will soon recognize the benefits of increasing their engineering teams. "I think it's a temporary effect right now. This is the natural conclusion for the short term — we keep things stable and we're trying to figure out how the market develops," he explained. Dohmke also pointed out that even as developers use AI tools to enhance their efficiency, he has yet to see a company eliminate developer roles entirely. "AI has already added more work to the backlogs. I haven't seen companies saying, 'Well, we're draining all our backlog and we have almost nothing left,'" he stated. He concluded by expressing his excitement about the current era for developers, asserting that the process of programming has improved significantly. "The dream of software development was always that I can take the idea that I have in my head on a Sunday morning, and by the evening, I have the app up and running on my phone," Dohmke shared, capturing the essence of innovation in the field.
