A new chapter in the iconic Blade Runner saga is on the horizon, with the upcoming miniseries, Blade Runner 2099, slated to debut on Amazon Prime Video in 2026. This announcement comes from Laura Lancaster, the Head of US SVOD TV Development and Series – Co-Productions at Amazon MGM Studios, who shared the news in an internal memo highlighting recent executive promotions. Originally greenlit in 2022 under the direction of the legendary Ridley Scott, Blade Runner 2099 has generated excitement with its star-studded cast. The series will feature acclaimed actress Michelle Yeoh, known for her roles in Everything Everywhere All At Once and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Alongside her, Hunter Schafer from Euphoria, Tom Burke from Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and Dimitri Abold, who appeared in Warrior Nun and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, are set to join the ensemble. Set 50 years after the events of Blade Runner 2049, this live-action miniseries will consist of six episodes. Silka Luisa, recognized for her work on Shining Girls and an episode of Paramount+'s Halo, will serve as the showrunner. Ridley Scott is on board as an executive producer and is speculated to direct one or more episodes of the series. Interestingly, the project does not appear to involve previous franchise stars such as Harrison Ford, Ryan Gosling, or Ana de Armas, nor director Denis Villeneuve. This miniseries is part of a broader trend in streaming, reviving beloved sci-fi franchises. Recently, the FX series Alien: Earth, available on Disney+, has garnered significant viewership and critical praise, contrasting with Amazon's The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which has received more mixed reviews despite its high production costs.
