The German government is gearing up to introduce new measures aimed at tackling the misuse of artificial intelligence for image manipulation that infringes on personal rights. This announcement comes from the justice ministry, which is determined to enhance legal frameworks that can effectively address these issues. One of the focal points of the controversy is Grok, the AI chatbot integrated into Elon Musk's social media platform, X. This feature has been scrutinized for its ability to generate explicit images, leading to an investigation in Europe. A recent report highlighted that Grok was being used to produce inappropriate images of women and children, often without their consent. In a bid to combat what Germany's media minister described as the "industrialisation of sexual harassment," the justice ministry is pushing for legal action at the European level. Justice ministry spokesperson Anna-Lena Beckfeld emphasized that the large-scale manipulation of images for systematic rights violations is intolerable. She stated, "We want to ensure that criminal law can be effectively utilized to combat this." To further address this growing concern, the ministry is focusing on regulating deepfakes and is working on a law aimed at preventing digital violence and supporting its victims. Beckfeld expressed a commitment to making it easier for individuals to take action against online violations of their rights. While specific proposals are still in the works, Beckfeld reassured journalists that concrete plans would be unveiled soon. In response to the backlash, xAI has imposed limitations on Grok's functionalities, now making them available exclusively to paid users. Musk has also warned that individuals who use the chatbot for illegal content will face the same penalties as those who upload such material directly.
