Germ brings end-to-end encrypted messages to Bluesky

A fresh startup named Germ is set to revolutionize communication on the Bluesky social platform by introducing end-to-end encrypted messaging. This new feature aims to provide users with a more secure chat option compared to the platform's current direct messaging system. After two years of dedicated development, Germ is launching its encrypted direct messages into beta this week, with plans to gradually onboard new testers before a full public release. The technology being developed by Germ, much of which will be available as open source, could potentially enable Bluesky to incorporate encrypted messaging directly into its application. Germ seeks to offer a compelling alternative to existing encrypted messaging services like iMessage, Signal, and WhatsApp. Utilizing advanced technologies such as Messaging Layer Security (MLS) and the AT Protocol (ATProto) that powers Bluesky, Germ allows users to chat securely without needing to share phone numbers. Users will have the flexibility to manage their messaging experience, such as choosing to receive direct messages only from those they follow or restricting who can initiate conversations. Importantly, when blocking users, individuals can decide whether the block applies solely within Germ or across all AT Proto-powered applications, including Bluesky. The vision of Germ is driven by co-founders Tessa Brown and Mark Xue. Brown, a communications scholar with a background at Stanford, emphasizes the importance of privacy in social networking, stating that the ability to communicate privately is crucial for building healthy relationships online. "Social media often feels intrusive; end-to-end encryption could redefine how we interact," she asserts. Meanwhile, Xue, a former privacy engineer at Apple, believes the reliance on phone numbers for secure communication is outdated. He aims to innovate new solutions in this area. Germ’s service operates through a “magic link” that users can include in their Bluesky profiles. This link enables seamless communication without requiring the download of a separate application. By leveraging Apple’s App Clips technology, Germ allows users to engage in conversations quickly and effortlessly. The link serves as a cryptographic key, authenticating users within the Bluesky network. Users can also opt to install the full Germ app for enhanced features and greater control over their messaging settings. Brown is enthusiastic about Germ’s role in the Bluesky community, especially given the platform's appeal to high-profile figures in U.S. politics. Germ is currently ahead in the race to provide encrypted messaging solutions, with hopes that its protocol will be widely adopted by Bluesky and similar platforms in the future. While the service is free for now, there are plans to introduce a premium subscription model that could offer advanced features, including personalized AI tools. Germ has already attracted pre-seed funding from various angel investors and institutional backers, including K5 Global and Mozilla Ventures, with aspirations to expand its offerings to Android users in the future.
