A startup called Germ becomes the first private messenger that launches directly from Bluesky’s app

In a groundbreaking move within the realm of social networking, Germ Network has launched the first-ever native end-to-end encrypted (E2E) messaging service within the decentralized Bluesky app. This integration marks a significant milestone, allowing users to communicate securely directly through the platform, a feature that sets it apart from traditional tech giants. The Germ DM feature, recently introduced by the California-based startup, allows users to seamlessly send encrypted messages to one another. This innovation not only enhances privacy within the Bluesky environment but also illustrates how open social networks function differently than the more controlled ecosystems of major tech companies. Germ is also sharing new guidelines to enable other applications using the AT Protocol—Bluesky’s foundational technology—to implement similar messaging capabilities. Earlier this month, Bluesky announced this integration, highlighting that Germ users can now add a messaging button on their profiles to facilitate encrypted communication. Additionally, the standalone Germ app is in public beta on iOS in North America and Europe, experiencing a remarkable surge in daily active users—five times the usual count—following the integration announcement. Founded by Tessa Brown, a former communications scholar at Stanford, and Mark Xue, a privacy engineer with a background at Apple, Germ aims to provide an alternative to existing E2E encrypted platforms like Signal and WhatsApp. It employs Messaging Layer Security (MLS), a cutting-edge standard sanctioned by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), in conjunction with the AT Protocol. Germ’s distinctive approach eliminates the need for a user’s phone number by utilizing the AT Protocol for encrypted chats. This ensures that messages remain secure and cannot be decrypted by any external service, including Germ itself. To initiate a conversation, users simply click on a badge displayed on a friend's Bluesky profile, which launches a lightweight iOS App Clip. After logging in with their AT Protocol handle, users can send messages instantly, with a prompt to download the full Germ DM app, though this is not mandatory. The company had laid the groundwork for this integration over several months, beginning with a private beta in August. Initially, users had to use magic links in their bios, but the new badge feature simplifies the process, making it more visible and user-friendly. Germ has maintained an open dialogue with the AT Protocol development community, including Bluesky’s teams, to refine the user experience. Brown expressed enthusiasm about collaborating with Bluesky, praising their focus on user accessibility to secure messaging. While the AT Protocol may explore E2E encryption in the future, its current focus remains on enhancing user experience. Germ’s immediate plans revolve around enhancing everyday messaging functionalities rather than monetization. However, in the future, they may explore paid features tailored to professionals such as creators and journalists, potentially offering features like multiple handles and AI-based message screening.
