Geoffrey Hinton, a renowned professor emeritus at the University of Toronto and often referred to as the "Godfather of AI," has expressed optimism about Google's potential to surpass OpenAI in the artificial intelligence sector. In a recent interview with Business Insider, Hinton noted that Google is strategically advancing its AI capabilities, particularly with the introduction of its latest models, Gemini 3 and Nano Banana Pro. Hinton highlighted that users have been impressed with the performance of Google's new AI offerings, suggesting that these models are already demonstrating superior capabilities compared to OpenAI's GPT-5. He remarked, "I think it's actually more surprising than it's taken this long for Google to overtake OpenAI," indicating that the tech giant is on the verge of significant advancements. Moreover, Hinton mentioned the possibility of Google securing a lucrative deal with Meta for the supply of in-house AI chips, which could further enhance its competitive edge. Reflecting on his experiences at Google Brain, he pointed out that although Google was once at the forefront of AI innovation, it had restrained its progress. "Google invented transformers. Google had big chatbots before other people," he stated. Earlier this year, Google faced criticism for the controversial launch of its image generation tools, which drew attention to the challenges of AI hallucinations. However, the company has since revised its strategies, leading to increased user engagement and a more promising roadmap for future AI development.
