This AI robot startup thinks humanoids are overrated

In an exciting development in the world of robotics, Genesis AI has introduced Eno, a unique wheeled robot designed without a humanoid appearance. Unveiled on Tuesday, Eno features two arms and an innovative three-panel body that can adjust its height and fold for easy storage, departing from traditional leg designs. Zhou Xian, the CEO of Genesis AI, shared ambitious plans to produce numerous units of Eno by year-end and initiate small-scale deployments, starting with manufacturers, logistics firms, and laboratories. Eventually, the goal is to make Eno available for home use, aiming to tap into the expanding robotics market as interest in AI-driven machines surges. "We anticipate a future where a billion general-purpose robots will be in use, and we intend to be a key player in that landscape," Xian stated. He founded Genesis AI after completing his Ph.D. at Carnegie Mellon in early 2025. The startup has successfully secured $105 million in funding from notable investors, including Eclipse Ventures and Khosla Ventures. Unlike many competitors focused solely on humanoid designs, Genesis AI is creating a comprehensive ecosystem, including the AI model, training tools, and the robot itself. Eno, whose name is 'one' spelled backward, is just the first of a series of robots the company plans to develop. During a recent visit to their R&D facility in the Bay Area, Xian revealed the concealed Eno. Inside a dim room, he showcased a training bust alongside a covered creation, hinting at the company’s innovative approach. Xian expressed concern about the future, stating that the proliferation of humanoid robots might not resonate well with society. Genesis AI's design philosophy for Eno emphasizes energy efficiency and adaptability. By opting for wheels instead of legs and forgoing a head, they aim to create a robot that seamlessly integrates into various environments, from industrial settings to domestic kitchens. Users will have the option to customize Eno’s color, aligning it with its surroundings. Equipped with GENE, Genesis AI's proprietary robotics model, Eno is designed to understand tasks, decompose them into actionable steps, and adjust to changing circumstances. An enhanced version of Eno will feature a screen on its torso, providing users insight into the robot's thought processes and actions. While many robotics firms remain in early stages of development, notable advancements are being made across the industry. Companies like Tesla and Boston Dynamics are exploring humanoid robotics, while startups like Sunday Robotics are gearing up to introduce robots for household tasks. Genesis AI plans to start deploying Eno with industrial clients and aims to enter the consumer market within three to five years, as they work to address safety concerns and improve interaction capabilities. The company acknowledges that the data required to train robots effectively is still limited, differentiating its approach from the vast datasets used for training chatbots. To gather high-quality data, Genesis AI is developing a wireless glove that captures intricate hand movements, allowing skilled workers to wear them during tasks. The goal is to enhance the robot's ability to perform complex physical jobs by learning from expert movements. Genesis AI’s shift away from teleoperation reflects its belief that this model is insufficient for scaling general-purpose robotics. With an eye on the future, the company remains committed to pushing the boundaries of what robots can achieve.
