General Motors is undergoing a significant production transition, moving vehicle manufacturing from China and Mexico to a facility in Kansas. This shift marks the impending conclusion of the Chevrolet Bolt EV, which is currently the sole model being produced at the Fairfax Assembly Plant. This realignment is influenced by the evolving economic and political landscape, particularly the impact of the previous administration's tariff policies and the termination of the federal EV tax credit, which offered substantial savings on qualifying electric vehicles. As a result, building cars in China and Mexico for sale in the U.S. has become more costly. The production of the 2027 Chevy Bolt EV, which recently debuted in dealerships, is projected to cease in approximately 18 months. Priced at $29,990, including destination charges, the Bolt EV stands as one of the most competitively priced electric vehicles available to American buyers. In a confirmation to TechCrunch, GM announced that the next-generation Buick Envision, currently manufactured in China, will start production at the Kansas facility in 2028. Additionally, the gas-powered Chevrolet Equinox, produced in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, is set to relocate to the Kansas plant by mid-2027. As GM proceeds with its plans, the future of the Bolt EV appears uncertain. A GM spokesperson reiterated that the Bolt was intended as a limited-run model upon its announcement in October. Meanwhile, the company has committed to investing in the Fairfax Assembly Plant for the development of its upcoming range of affordable electric vehicles, although a timeline for these investments remains unclear. GM continues to offer other electric models, including the Chevy Equinox and Chevy Blazer, leaving open the possibility that the Bolt could be revived if demand exceeds expectations.
