General Fusion has officially commenced trading on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol GFUZ, marking a significant milestone as the first publicly listed company in the fusion energy sector. The debut has garnered considerable investor interest, with the stock surging by 40% to $12.85 shortly after trading began on Monday. The company’s journey to the public market followed its merger with Spring Valley Acquisition Corp. III, finalized just last week. While the merger presented the potential for General Fusion to enhance its balance sheet by up to $230 million, it is expected that a substantial number of investors opted for redemptions, likely resulting in a net influx of less than $30 million after accounting for fees. In addition to the merger, General Fusion successfully raised $108 million from private investors, bringing its total cash reserves to approximately $150 million. This financial boost comes after a challenging period where the company faced cash shortages and had to lay off 25% of its workforce due to difficulties in raising the necessary funds. Founded in 2002, General Fusion has long been a player in the fusion energy arena, having raised over $600 million from private sources throughout its history. The company employs a unique method known as magnetized target fusion, which utilizes electromagnetic fields to generate magnetized plasma inside a chamber lined with liquid lithium. This innovative technique is designed to compress the lithium around the fusion fuel, ultimately achieving the fusion reaction that releases energy. While General Fusion initially aimed to demonstrate a crucial milestone known as breakeven—the point at which a fusion reaction produces more energy than it consumes—by the end of this year, financial constraints have pushed this goal back to 2028 or later. The company continues to target the operation of its first power plant around 2035, signaling its commitment to advancing fusion technology despite the challenges ahead.
