This chart showing ChatGPT vs. Gemini web traffic should have OpenAI worried

OpenAI is facing increasing pressure in the AI landscape, as evidenced by recent web traffic trends that reveal a significant shift. Following the launch of Google's Gemini 3 Pro, traffic to Gemini's platform has surged, while that of ChatGPT has seen a decline. According to data from Similarweb, Gemini's web traffic grew by an impressive 28.4% month-over-month in December, contrasting with a 5.6% drop in ChatGPT's traffic. This data, highlighted by Menlo Ventures partner Deedy Das, represents only a fraction of the broader picture, focusing solely on visits to chatgpt.com and gemini.google.com. It does not account for the usage of various consumer applications or Google's AI features integrated into its search products. Despite these limitations, the figures underscore a notable shift in the competitive dynamics of the AI industry. Year-over-year statistics reveal that while ChatGPT's traffic has increased by 49.5%, Gemini's growth rate is astonishingly high at 563.6%. In December alone, ChatGPT attracted around 5.5 billion visitors, maintaining a lead over Gemini, which recorded 1.7 billion visits. Other competitors like DeepSeek, Grok, Character.AI, and Perplexity lagged significantly, each with under 400 million visitors. Gemini 3 has been recognized for its advanced capabilities, showcasing improved visual creativity and coding skills compared to earlier models. Google's advantage in seamlessly integrating its AI with widely used search tools poses a formidable challenge for OpenAI, which must persuade users to choose ChatGPT over Google's offerings. The rapid ascent of Gemini 3 prompted OpenAI to declare a 'code red' internally, as CEO Sam Altman communicated the need to refocus efforts on ChatGPT amidst rising competition. Altman has publicly acknowledged the need for OpenAI to adapt, admitting that while Gemini 3 did not impact the company as severely as initially feared, it did reveal strategic vulnerabilities that OpenAI is now working to address swiftly.
