Gemini is officially replacing Google Assistant in Android Auto, the widely used smartphone projection system found in countless vehicles. Google made this announcement on Thursday, revealing that the rollout is designed for users who have transitioned from Google Assistant to Gemini on their smartphones. With the introduction of Gemini to Android Auto, Google aims to enhance the user experience by enabling more natural and conversational interactions. This upgrade allows drivers to engage in back-and-forth discussions to accomplish more intricate tasks while on the move. Android Auto allows smartphone features like navigation, music, and messaging to be displayed on car screens wirelessly. This transition is not unexpected, as it aligns with Google's broader strategy to phase out Google Assistant in favor of Gemini across its various platforms and devices. The company had previously indicated in May that Gemini would be available for Android Auto later this year. Gemini empowers users to inquire about businesses along their travel routes, making it easier to find specific locations. For instance, a user might ask, "Hey Google, I need your help. I’m suddenly craving barbecue. Any good spots along my route that are open now, near my destination?" If a user expresses interest in a particular establishment, Gemini can provide additional insights, such as the restaurant's signature dish or its pet-friendly policy. In addition to assisting with navigation, Gemini allows users to respond to messages and receive text summaries. For example, one might say, "Let my friend know I’m stuck in traffic and add my ETA to the message," or even request a translation of a message before sending it. Furthermore, Gemini enables users to check their Gmail while driving. A user could ask, “I have a hotel booked for tonight. I think the address is in my email. Can you check and navigate there?” It can also summarize unread emails for convenience. For music lovers, Gemini can curate the perfect playlist for a road trip by asking for something upbeat and family-friendly, such as, "Can you give me a road trip playlist? Ideally something upbeat, about 3 hours long, that’s good for both me and the kids." This integration works seamlessly with popular streaming services like YouTube Music and Spotify. Moreover, users can engage in live conversations with Gemini by saying, "Hey Google, let’s chat." Whether it’s discussing travel plans or seeking gift ideas, Gemini is designed to assist users throughout their journeys. Starting Thursday, Gemini will be available globally on Android Auto in 45 languages. To access it, users must ensure they have the Gemini app installed on their phones. A tooltip will appear on the car display once it is accessible. Activation requires saying "Hey Google" and then either pressing the mic button on the car screen or holding down the voice control button on the steering wheel.
