Gap becomes first major fashion company to offer checkout within Google's Gemini

Gap has made a groundbreaking move by collaborating with Google's Gemini, allowing customers to complete their purchases directly within the AI platform. This initiative marks Gap as the first significant fashion brand to engage in agentic commerce with Google, according to exclusive reports from CNBC. As consumer habits shift from traditional search engines to AI-driven platforms for discovering products, retailers are compelled to adapt their marketing strategies. Sven Gerjets, Gap's Chief Technology Officer, emphasized that shopping is no longer just about keyword searches; it has evolved into interactive conversations. He explained that customers are now asking specific questions, like what to wear for a wedding or a job interview, and brands must stay relevant to these inquiries. When users search for items like jeans or hoodies on Gemini, the platform will suggest Gap products that match their preferences. Importantly, shoppers can purchase these items without being redirected to Gap's website. The product information displayed will be curated by Gap, ensuring accuracy and enabling the brand to gather valuable customer data while enhancing the shopping experience. Purchases will be processed through Google Pay, with Gap managing shipping and logistics. The company is currently in the testing phase and anticipates a full rollout to customers in the near future. Additionally, Gap plans to introduce an AI-driven sizing tool called Bold Metrics, designed to assist online shoppers in selecting the right size. This partnership with Gemini, along with the implementation of advanced AI tools, positions Gap favorably in an increasingly competitive fashion market. As the industry becomes more fragmented, retailers must ensure their product data is optimized for AI platforms to avoid losing sales opportunities. While many retailers are incorporating AI technologies, Gap stands out as its competitors have yet to announce similar collaborations with Gemini. Gerjets noted that this initial foray into agentic commerce is just the beginning, with plans for future enhancements based on customer feedback. Although customers currently cannot link loyalty accounts or use points for transactions, Gerjets hinted that such features could be introduced later. He stated, "We'll continue to evolve the experience and bring forward what customers want." Gap's pioneering partnership follows OpenAI's previous collaborations with companies like Walmart and Etsy, which have since retracted plans for in-app checkout. As more shoppers turn to AI for product discovery, the comfort level with using these platforms for transactions remains uncertain. However, with Google already holding customer payment information, some users may feel more at ease using Gemini than newer AI platforms. Gemini's recent enhancements, including real-time product data, help mitigate issues like stock shortages and pricing inaccuracies. Shoppers can also enjoy features like adding multiple items to their carts and connecting loyalty accounts, which OpenAI's platform has yet to fully implement. Gerjets commented on the rapid evolution of this space, stating, "We're all evolving and learning together. Who knows what the future holds in terms of market dynamics and competition?" He reiterated the importance of collaborating with various platforms to meet customer needs effectively.
