Chinese auto giant GAC targets 17-fold boost to European sales by 2027

Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) is making headlines with its bold ambition to amplify its electric vehicle sales in Europe by an astonishing 17 times within the next two years. This strategic move marks GAC as the latest Chinese automotive manufacturer to challenge the established players in Europe, where competition is already fierce. The entry of GAC into the European market is expected to heighten the rivalry faced by traditional automotive giants like BMW and Mercedes-Benz. These brands are navigating a rapidly evolving landscape as they strive to maintain their market positions against a backdrop of increasing competition from Chinese manufacturers such as BYD and Xpeng. At the IAA Mobility auto show in Munich, GAC’s international president, Wei Haigang, highlighted the importance of Europe as a pivotal market for the company. "Europe is one of our five major markets. It is a strategic market. We hope Europe will account for a major portion of our overseas market in the future," he stated in a recent interview. GAC has set its sights on selling approximately 3,000 electric vehicles in Europe this year, with plans to expand that number to 15,000 by 2026 and reach at least 50,000 by 2027. The company showcased its Aion V and Aion UT fully electric vehicles at the auto show, emphasizing its commitment to innovation in the region. Furthermore, GAC is also considering the introduction of a plug-in hybrid model for European consumers in the near future. Despite the challenges posed by the European Union's tariffs on Chinese-made electric vehicles, GAC remains undeterred. The company is exploring options for local manufacturing within Europe to enhance its operational capabilities. "We are hoping the Chinese government and the European Union can negotiate further to bring the tariffs down," Wei remarked, underscoring the company’s intent to establish a manufacturing presence in Europe to better serve local markets.
