AI could hollow out the next generation of workers

The rise of AI technology is transforming the workplace, making young employees faster and more efficient. However, this advancement comes with a significant caveat: it risks depriving them of the expertise needed to truly excel in their fields. Tom Slater, manager at Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust and a partner at Baillie Gifford, voiced this concern during a recent appearance on the "Merryn Talks Money" podcast. Slater warned that an overzealous adoption of AI could undermine the training pipeline for future professionals. He emphasized that without a solid investment in foundational and analytical skills, businesses may end up with a workforce that knows how to utilize AI tools but lacks the critical thinking abilities needed to evaluate the outputs effectively. This sentiment is echoed by various AI researchers and tech industry leaders, who caution that excessive reliance on AI could erode essential skills. Innovation theorist John Nosta remarked that AI is conditioning people to think in reverse, providing polished answers before they fully grasp the underlying concepts. Similarly, AI researcher Vivienne Ming observed that many users are allowing AI to do their thinking for them, rather than using it as a tool to enhance their reasoning abilities. Slater stressed the importance of young employees facing challenging tasks to cultivate their expertise. He pointed out, "You might become adept at using AI, but that could mislead you into believing you're proficient in the actual subject matter." He referenced a study from MIT which tracked 54 participants over four months, revealing that those who relied on ChatGPT for writing tasks exhibited lower brain engagement and often struggled to recall or quote their own work shortly after completion. The crux of the issue lies in the fact that while AI may boost short-term productivity, it can simultaneously weaken long-term capabilities. Slater cautioned that this creates a perilous incentive for companies to cut back on entry-level hires in favor of AI systems, a strategy he regards as a "false economy." He argues that it is shortsighted to allow the current generation of seasoned professionals to benefit from these tools without considering the implications for the next generation. Slater likened the situation to pilots who must learn to fly manually before relying on autopilot; professionals should develop deep expertise before AI can be effectively integrated into their work. Ultimately, he concluded that the individuals who will thrive in the workforce are not necessarily those who utilize AI the most, but rather those who can still think critically without it.
