Fuse raises $25M to disrupt aging loan origination systems used by U.S. credit unions

In 2023, after dedicating three years to an automotive lending startup, co-founders Andres Klaric and Marc Escapa recognized the potential of large language models (LLMs) to innovate a crucial component of the lending sector: the loan origination system (LOS). Frustrated with the drawbacks of existing legacy software, Klaric, originally from Bolivia, and Escapa, a Spanish immigrant, decided to pivot their business strategy towards creating Fuse, an AI-driven LOS. On Monday, Fuse announced a successful $25 million Series A funding round, led by Footwork, Primary Venture Partners, NextView Ventures, and Commerce Ventures. The loan origination system acts as the core record-keeping system for most lenders, overseeing the entire loan process from application and underwriting to approval and disbursement. Unfortunately, traditional systems can take nearly a year to integrate and often come with costly multi-year contracts, according to Klaric. By harnessing AI technology, Fuse asserts that its platform can enable lenders to manage greater loan volumes, streamline underwriting processes, and drastically lower operational expenses. Currently serving over 100 customers, Fuse aims to facilitate the transition for credit unions by offering free access to its services for the first 50 qualifying institutions until their existing agreements with legacy LOS providers expire. To fund this initiative, the startup has set aside $5 million for what it calls a 'rescue fund.' Klaric emphasizes that this is not merely a marketing strategy, explaining that high costs associated with legacy software often prevent credit unions from switching providers. Nikhil Basu Trivedi, co-founder and general partner at Footwork, expressed his support for Fuse, noting the presence of over 4,000 credit unions in the U.S. that are in dire need of technological advancement. "Credit unions are eager to adopt AI but often lack the guidance on how to proceed," he stated. He likened the LOS to essential enterprise resource planning (ERP) or customer relationship management (CRM) systems, underscoring its significance in the daily operations of credit unions. Replacing an LOS has historically been a complex task, but Fuse’s founders assure that their solution can be implemented relatively swiftly. Among the legacy systems that Fuse seeks to replace are publicly traded nCino and private-equity-backed MeridianLink. However, Fuse faces competition from other startups also focusing on AI-enhanced LOS solutions, including Casca and Glide. Klaric is passionate about empowering credit unions to cut costs, primarily because these institutions are crucial in serving the American middle class. He remarked, "Credit unions and smaller financial institutions possess everything needed to succeed: local presence, strong community focus, excellent member service, and prime branch locations. What they lack is the right technology."
