Instead of selling to Meta, AI chip startup FuriosaAI signed a huge customer

FuriosaAI, a South Korean startup specializing in AI chip technology, has announced a significant partnership with LG AI Research. The collaboration will see FuriosaAI supplying its RNGD AI chip to enterprises utilizing LG's newly launched EXAONE platform, designed to enhance the capabilities of large language models (LLMs). This partnership comes shortly after LG revealed its advanced hybrid AI model, EXAONE 4.0. The collaboration aims to address various industries, including electronics, finance, telecommunications, and biotechnology, offering innovative solutions across these sectors. Notably, this announcement follows FuriosaAI's decision to turn down an $800 million acquisition offer from Meta just three months prior. The rejection stemmed from disagreements regarding post-acquisition strategies rather than financial terms. Meta's interest in FuriosaAI highlights its ongoing strategy to decrease dependency on third-party suppliers like Nvidia. FuriosaAI's CEO, June Paik, emphasized the importance of their mission, stating, "We want to continue our mission, and I think it’s an exciting opportunity at the same time. I believe it’s a very impactful contribution, both personally and for the company, to make AI computing more sustainable." While the potential for mergers and acquisitions with Meta appears to be off the table, Paik did not disclose whether the startup is seeking new funding. However, he expressed optimism about the partnership with LG, noting that EXAONE is set to become a cornerstone of the Korean AI ecosystem and will cater to both local and global demands. "We expect there will be many demands for this EXAONE, as well as for our chip solutions in South Korea, but not only in Korea. The LG team is also partnering with and doing business with global customers," Paik added. This collaboration is particularly noteworthy as it marks one of the rare endorsements of a competitor to Nvidia from a major company. Paik explained that one of the key advantages of their solution is its cost-effectiveness. "We had to prove that our solution not only delivers strong performance but also lowers total cost of ownership," he said. FuriosaAI claims their RNGD accelerator surpasses the performance of leading GPUs when integrated with LG's EXAONE models, boasting 2.25 times better inference performance. Additionally, LG has acknowledged the energy efficiency of FuriosaAI’s hardware, which is specifically designed for AI applications rather than general-purpose tasks. With a small global team of just 15 employees, the Seoul-based startup is poised to make a significant impact in the AI chip market, reinforcing its commitment to specialized AI computing solutions.
