Fundamental raises $255 million Series A with a new take on big data analysis

On Thursday, the AI lab Fundamental emerged from stealth mode, introducing an innovative foundation model designed to tackle a longstanding challenge: extracting valuable insights from the vast amounts of structured data generated by businesses. By integrating traditional predictive AI techniques with cutting-edge tools, Fundamental aims to revolutionize data analysis for large enterprises. CEO Jeremy Fraenkel shared insights with TechCrunch, explaining, "While large language models (LLMs) excel at processing unstructured data such as text, audio, and video, they struggle with structured data like tables." He emphasized that their model, named Nexus, is uniquely equipped to handle such data effectively. Fundamental's approach has garnered substantial attention from investors, culminating in a remarkable $255 million in funding at a valuation of $1.2 billion. This significant investment is primarily from a $225 million Series A round led by Oak HC/FT, Valor Equity Partners, Battery Ventures, and Salesforce Ventures, with additional participation from Hetz Ventures and prominent angel investors including Perplexity CEO Aravind Srinivas, Brex co-founder Henrique Dubugras, and Datadog CEO Olivier Pomel. Distinctively referred to as a Large Tabular Model (LTM), Nexus diverges from traditional AI methodologies in several key aspects. Unlike typical models that depend on transformer architecture, Nexus is deterministic, ensuring consistent answers to the same inquiries. Fundamental characterizes Nexus as a foundation model due to its adherence to standard pre-training and fine-tuning processes, yet it delivers markedly different results compared to offerings from OpenAI or Anthropic. This differentiation is crucial, particularly as Fundamental targets applications where existing AI models often struggle. Transformer-based systems, constrained by their context windows, typically falter when analyzing extensive datasets—such as spreadsheets containing billions of rows—which are commonplace in large enterprises. Fraenkel sees this as a significant opportunity for Fundamental. With Nexus, the company offers a powerful tool for Big Data analysis that surpasses the capabilities of current algorithms. "You can now have one model across all your use cases, vastly expanding the number of scenarios you can address," Fraenkel noted. “With Nexus, you achieve better performance than what could be accomplished with a team of data scientists.” The promise of Nexus has already attracted several high-profile contracts, including multi-million-dollar agreements with Fortune 100 companies. Furthermore, Fundamental has formed a strategic partnership with AWS, allowing users to deploy Nexus directly from their existing AWS instances.
