Another deep tech chip startup becomes a unicorn: Frore hits $1.64B

Frore Systems, an eight-year-old semiconductor startup, has successfully secured $143 million in its Series D funding round, propelling its valuation to an impressive $1.64 billion. This announcement was made public on Monday, marking a significant milestone for the company, which has now amassed a total of $340 million in funding. While Frore does not manufacture chips directly, it specializes in innovative liquid cooling systems designed for semiconductor applications. Founded by two former engineers from Qualcomm, the company's technology was initially developed to provide air-cooling solutions for smartphones and other compact, fanless electronic devices. The shift towards chip technology was influenced by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who experienced a demo of Frore's cooling technology approximately two years ago. Following this, Huang encouraged the startup to explore liquid cooling solutions, which have become essential for the performance of AI chips and systems. Responding to this guidance, Frore has since released products compatible with a range of Nvidia chips and boards, alongside offerings for Qualcomm and AMD. The investment landscape for AI semiconductors is thriving, with Frore joining the ranks of other newly minted unicorns in the sector. Competitors like Positron reached a $1 billion valuation in February, while Recursive Intelligence launched with a staggering $4 billion valuation. Additionally, Eridu recently initiated a $200 million Series A funding round to develop cutting-edge AI networking chips, although it has not disclosed its valuation. Frore's recent funding round saw participation from several prominent investors, including Fidelity, Mayfield, Addition, Qualcomm Ventures, and Alumni Ventures, among others.
