Prem Qu Nair, a key figure and early engineer at Windsurf, has made the leap to Cognition, the innovative AI firm behind the groundbreaking autonomous coding agent known as Devin. Nair shared his thoughts on this transition via social media, describing it as a return to a dynamic, code-centric atmosphere aimed at revolutionizing software development. Having been the second employee at Windsurf, Nair dedicated over three and a half years to merging AI with software engineering. However, despite his significant contributions, he revealed that he exited the recent acquisition with a payout equivalent to just 1% of his vested shares' potential value at the time of the deal. "I was offered a position at Google DeepMind as part of the acquisition," Nair stated. "While I cannot delve into specifics for legal reasons, I feel it’s important to be open about my situation. I encountered an offer that was retracted almost immediately. This forced me to relinquish all my vested shares earned during my tenure at Windsurf." Choosing not to continue with DeepMind, Nair opted to forge a new path with Cognition, indicating that this decision was driven by more than mere business considerations. For him, it signifies a return to the roots of software innovation. "As someone passionate about software engineering, Cognition feels like home," he expressed. "It brings back the excitement reminiscent of Windsurf's early days, where we wrote vast amounts of code while enjoying the process." At Cognition, Nair has joined a team that is advancing tools like Devin, which earlier this year made headlines as the first fully autonomous AI software engineer. His mission is to blend the advancements of Devin with insights gained from Windsurf, aiming to build a top-tier integrated development environment (IDE) and AI-driven coding agents. This move also sheds light on wider issues within the startup sector regarding equity, acquisitions, and employee remuneration. Nair's choice to openly discuss the financial implications of Windsurf’s sale is notable in an industry that typically keeps such matters under wraps.
