OpenAI's chief research scientist shares the book that inspired him when he was unsure about his career path

"My dad gave me this book when I was pretty unsure of what I wanted to do," he shared, emphasizing the impact it had on his outlook. Pachocki, who joined OpenAI in 2017, has since played a pivotal role in the development of GPT-4 and succeeded Ilya Sutskever as chief scientist in May 2024. "Hackers and Painters" delves into the shared traits of hackers and artists, illustrating that both groups are driven by a desire to create and innovate. In one of his essays, Graham states, "What hackers and painters have in common is that they're both makers." The connection between Pachocki and Graham reflects a fascinating narrative arc. Graham’s book was published in 2004, shortly before Sam Altman, co-founder of OpenAI, met him during the early days of Y Combinator. Altman’s startup, Loopt, was part of the first cohort funded by the accelerator, marking the beginning of a significant relationship. Graham had previously recognized Altman as one of the most intriguing startup founders, ultimately appointing him as president of Y Combinator. Pachocki expressed amusement at how the pieces of his journey have come together: "It's actually very hilarious thinking about it now. I didn't really connect the dots."
