I pivoted my tech career to focus on AI. Now I make $6,400 a week — but I care more about staying relevant than the money.

Transitioning from traditional software engineering to a focus on artificial intelligence has been transformative for 28-year-old Mostofa Adib Shakib. Originally from Dhaka, Bangladesh, and now based in Iowa, Mostofa has seen his earnings soar to $6,400 per week while gaining a fulfilling sense of purpose in his work. Mostofa began his career at Snap Inc. and subsequently moved to ZipRecruiter, where he earned a base salary of $145,000. However, his perspective shifted dramatically with the release of ChatGPT in late 2022. Recognizing the impending transformation in the tech landscape, he made a pivotal decision to pivot away from traditional paths and immerse himself in AI. Completing dual degrees in computer science and mathematics, along with a minor in electrical engineering at Texas Tech, Mostofa was well-prepared academically. Yet, he faced significant hurdles regarding his visa status, which restricted his employment options. With legal assistance, he secured an O-1 visa, allowing him the flexibility to work as a contractor and pursue multiple opportunities. Since February, Mostofa has been contracted with Mercor, an AI-focused recruitment startup, where he works full-time on innovative AI products. His weekly income reflects not only his skills but also the growing demand for expertise in AI, a field he believes is ripe with potential. While financial rewards are significant, Mostofa emphasizes that his primary motivation lies in remaining relevant and continuously learning in a rapidly evolving industry. He has taken proactive steps to deepen his knowledge in AI, engaging with various resources, and even developing software projects aimed at helping others enhance their professional profiles. Mostofa believes that the current phase of AI development is akin to the early days of personal computing and the internet, offering unprecedented opportunities for those willing to adapt and grow. Ultimately, his journey illustrates the importance of embracing change and the value of lifelong learning in today’s tech-driven world. Mostofa's story serves as an inspiration for others looking to navigate their careers in an ever-evolving landscape, showing that with determination and a willingness to pivot, success is within reach.
