I traded San Francisco's startup scene for a quieter life in Buenos Aires. It's helped me build a family.

Koby Conrad, the 32-year-old founder of Sunflower, an innovative AI tool designed to support sobriety, has made a life-changing decision by leaving San Francisco for Buenos Aires, where he finds a better balance between work and family. Originally hailing from Boise, Idaho, Koby was coaxed into the tech world by his brother, who persuaded him to move to the Bay Area at the age of 26. In San Francisco, Koby initially faced the stark reality of high living costs, paying $1,600 for a small room while sharing a home with nine other roommates. Despite the challenges, he cherished the city's vibrant culture and the caliber of talent around him. "Being in SF is like peering into the future," he reflected, expressing his concerns about missing out on innovations while living elsewhere. However, the pressure of the city's pace and the cost of raising a family began to weigh on him. After considering his options, Koby ultimately chose Buenos Aires over New York. He had previously enjoyed visits to Latin America, finding the culture and food captivating, while also appreciating the significantly lower cost of living. In Buenos Aires, he observed that one could lead a comfortable life on a $100,000 salary, a stark contrast to the financial strain he felt in San Francisco. Safety was also a crucial factor in his decision. While he experienced a close call in Medellín, Koby found Buenos Aires to be one of the safest cities in Latin America, with friendly locals and a community-oriented atmosphere. He expressed excitement about starting a family there, anticipating the arrival of his child and the joy of settling into a new office space. Koby highlighted that while the tech talent might still reside in places like San Francisco and New York, the operational aspects of his business could thrive in a city like Buenos Aires. He shared how the lifestyle allows him to focus on work without the distractions of the bustling startup scene. In his reflections, Koby emphasized the importance of family life for ambitious founders. He noted that many of the most driven entrepreneurs he knows are seeking a balance that includes raising children, a goal he believes shifts the narrative around success in the tech industry. Koby's journey illustrates a growing trend among founders who are prioritizing personal fulfillment alongside their professional ambitions.
