I worked in tech for over 20 years. Now I'm getting a master's in AI because there's too much for me to learn alone.

Michael Lane, the vice president of development at Rev, shares his unique academic journey, which took a turn after over two decades in the tech industry. Starting as an undergraduate in computer engineering at the University of Toronto in 1995, Lane faced financial challenges that forced him to leave school just three semesters in. This left him with a sense of unfinished business, but he pivoted into a career in tech sales, which reignited his passion for technology. After a few years, Lane transitioned to a software development role, ultimately completing his bachelor's degree in computer science in 2006. This achievement was a significant milestone, allowing him to fill the educational gap he had experienced earlier. Over the years, he gained valuable experience at well-known companies like Logitech and Kobo before joining Rev in 2024 to spearhead their AI product engineering. Lane's introduction to artificial intelligence was transformative, particularly with the launch of ChatGPT, which he describes as a groundbreaking moment in tech. Recognizing the rapid evolution of AI, he decided to deepen his understanding by pursuing a part-time master's degree in AI at East Texas A&M University, starting in spring 2026. He believes that to lead in AI, one must possess a comprehensive grasp of the technology's complexities. While many tech leaders may not code regularly, Lane emphasizes the importance of staying informed about technical discussions to guide his team effectively. He acknowledges the value of online courses but argues that they often provide only a superficial understanding of AI. To truly build innovative AI solutions, a solid foundation in concepts like machine learning and neural networks is essential. Lane encourages professionals at all levels in software development to embrace AI as a powerful tool to enhance their work. He believes that despite the controversies surrounding AI, it holds the potential to revolutionize business practices, much like the introduction of the iPhone did in the past.
