Sebastian Kurz went from Austria's youngest chancellor to building a $3 billion AI cybersecurity startup

Sebastian Kurz, once the youngest chancellor of Austria, has transitioned from the political arena to the tech world, establishing a formidable presence in the AI cybersecurity sector. Now based in a modern glass tower in Tel Aviv, Kurz's ambition remains as fierce as ever, reflecting the rapid evolution of his career. At just 39 years old, Kurz has achieved remarkable milestones, including serving as the country’s foreign minister at 27 and becoming chancellor at 31. Today, he co-leads DREAM, a cybersecurity startup that has recently secured $260 million in a Series C funding round, pushing its valuation to an impressive $3 billion. This achievement marks a significant turning point for the company, which was launched just three and a half years ago. The funding round attracted major investors, including Bicycle Capital, Group 11, Bain Capital, and others, yet both Kurz and his co-founder, Shalev Hulio, maintain a humble demeanor. "When we started this company from scratch, we had no guarantees of success," Kurz stated, emphasizing their focus on building a lasting impact rather than merely celebrating achievements. Kurz believes that the future of cyber warfare will be dominated by artificial intelligence. He envisions a landscape where AI systems engage in combat, prompting his commitment to equip governments and organizations with advanced defenses against cyber threats. Together with Hulio, they have merged the skills of elite hackers with AI technology to create a unique cybersecurity platform designed to preemptively thwart state-sponsored attacks. Hulio, who brings extensive experience from his previous role at NSO Group, highlights that many of the threats they counter originate from countries like China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea. He underscores the importance of empowering nations to independently manage their cybersecurity, asserting that governments should not be reliant on external powers for their defense strategies. With a growing clientele across Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, DREAM has already generated around $300 million in revenue and achieved profitability this year, employing approximately 350 people. As for future plans, Kurz acknowledges that an initial public offering (IPO) is a viable option for their fast-expanding company, although their immediate priority is to further develop operations in regions like Abu Dhabi and Germany. The founders' contrasting styles reflect their diverse backgrounds, with Kurz's disciplined approach clashing humorously with Hulio's more relaxed demeanor. Yet, both recognize each other's strengths, with Kurz praising Hulio as a technological innovator and Hulio admiring Kurz's political acumen. In a landscape where many former political figures struggle to carve out new paths, Kurz has notably succeeded in reinventing himself as a key player in the tech realm, illustrating the potential for impactful change beyond the political stage.
