An AI startup's viral LinkedIn story and the 'fake it till you make it' approach

In a bold move that has sparked considerable debate, Sam Udotong and Krish Ramineni, co-founders of Fireflies.ai, initially operated under the guise of an AI bot named Fred while manually taking notes for over 100 meetings. This unconventional strategy, which they referred to as 'fake it till you make it,' was revealed by Udotong in a viral LinkedIn post that garnered nearly 3,000 reactions and a flood of comments, both praising and questioning their approach. Fireflies.ai, which specializes in automating note-taking for online meetings, was born out of necessity when the founders faced financial pressures. Ramineni explained that during their early days in 2017, they had to validate their idea before investing in product development. They reached out to friends in the tech industry, gauging interest in a service that would manage their meeting notes for $100 a month. While the founders mentioned human oversight, they did not clarify that their initial service was entirely manual. By posing as an AI, Ramineni and Udotong participated in numerous meetings, diligently jotting down notes by hand. After each session, they would promptly deliver the notes, leading to significant demand for their service. However, the intense workload quickly took its toll, as the duo faced exhaustion from back-to-back meetings. Unbeknownst to their customers, the founders refrained from seeking investors until they had developed a fully automated product. By late 2018, the manual note-taking phase had concluded, and they began receiving small investments from angel investors. Their breakthrough came in 2019 when Fireflies.ai successfully beta-tested its product and secured over $4 million in seed funding by demonstrating a functioning prototype to institutional investors. Experts have labeled the founders' early strategy as 'pretotyping,' a method where entrepreneurs simulate a product to gauge market interest before actual development. Tim Weiss, a management professor, noted that while this technique is common in the startup world, it raises ethical concerns if not employed transparently. Kevin Werbach, a business ethics professor, pointed out that the 'fake it till you make it' mentality is deeply ingrained in tech culture, likening it to the 'reality distortion field' famously utilized by Steve Jobs. Nevertheless, he cautioned that such tactics can lead to disastrous outcomes if mismanaged. Today, Fireflies.ai boasts impressive metrics, having processed over 2 billion meeting minutes for roughly 20 million users, equating to an astounding 4,000 years of meetings based on an eight-hour workday. Ramineni acknowledges the skepticism surrounding AI technology, emphasizing the importance of transparency in fundraising and product development. He concluded, 'You can't fake it till you make it forever — that's not how it works.'
