Hacker who stole 120,000 bitcoins wants a second chance—and a security job

Ilya Lichtenstein, known for his involvement in a monumental cryptocurrency theft in 2016, has emerged from prison with a desire to turn over a new leaf. Taking to LinkedIn, he reflected on his past, stating, "Ten years ago, I made the decision to hack the largest cryptocurrency exchange globally." At that time, Lichtenstein was struggling to find success with his startup and resorted to illicit means. He admitted, "This was a terrible idea. It was the worst thing I had ever done. It disrupted my life, harmed those close to me, and affected thousands of users of the exchange. I deeply regret disappointing many who placed their trust in me and misused my skills." In 2023, Lichtenstein and his partner, Heather Morgan, pleaded guilty to charges of money laundering related to their audacious scheme that resulted in the theft of 120,000 bitcoins, valued at over $10 billion today, from the cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex. The couple was apprehended in their Manhattan residence in 2022. Following his arrest, Lichtenstein cooperated with law enforcement, aiding in the recovery of the stolen assets and contributing to various federal investigations involving cryptocurrencies. He expressed that he found the experience of working with authorities rewarding and now seeks a role in cybersecurity to leverage his experiences for good.
