A high school dropout who got hired at OpenAI says he used ChatGPT to learn Ph.D.-level AI

In a remarkable story highlighting the potential of self-directed learning, Gabriel Petersson, a high school dropout, has emerged as a research scientist at OpenAI, focusing on the Sora project. On a recent episode of the "Extraordinary" podcast, Petersson shared how he leveraged ChatGPT to master machine learning, a field often dominated by those with advanced degrees. "Universities no longer hold exclusive rights to foundational knowledge," he stated, emphasizing that tools like ChatGPT allow anyone to acquire essential skills. Petersson, who left high school in Sweden in 2019, initially joined a small startup where he was compelled to learn coding quickly to build product recommendation systems and manage integrations. Reflecting on his unconventional learning path, he remarked, "The advantage of working in real-world settings is the immediate need to solve practical problems." He adopted a top-down approach to mastering machine learning, using ChatGPT to brainstorm project ideas and generate code. Whenever he encountered bugs, he collaborated with the AI to troubleshoot and refine his understanding. "With this method, you quickly accumulate foundational knowledge, making the learning process much more efficient," he explained. Petersson advocates for a results-oriented mindset, asserting that companies prioritize skills and profitability over credentials. The tech landscape is increasingly favoring dropouts and non-traditional learners. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, who himself is a Stanford dropout, recently expressed admiration for today’s young innovators, highlighting the vast opportunities available in the tech field. In a similar vein, venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz noted that it's an opportune moment for young entrepreneurs, while some industry leaders, like Palantir's CEO Alex Karp, have openly criticized the relevance of traditional education. Karp's company even launched a program aimed at high school graduates who choose to forgo college in favor of gaining practical experience. Petersson’s journey exemplifies the changing dynamics of the tech industry, where passion and problem-solving skills can open doors, regardless of formal educational backgrounds.
