Fei-Fei Li, the 'Godmother of AI' whose startup is now valued at north of $1 billion, got her start as a dry cleaner

Every notable scientist has a unique backstory, and Fei-Fei Li, often referred to as the 'Godmother of AI,' is no exception. Known for her groundbreaking work with ImageNet, this Stanford professor has co-founded World Labs, an AI startup that has rapidly achieved a valuation exceeding $1 billion. Li's journey began in a modest setting. At just 15 years old, she emigrated from China to the United States and helped her family manage a dry-cleaning business in Parsippany, New Jersey. Reflecting on those early days, Li shared in a Bloomberg interview, "We were not financially well off. My parents worked cashier jobs, and I took on roles in Chinese restaurants. We started the dry cleaner shop to survive." With a sense of humor, she often refers to herself as the 'CEO' of the family business, which she managed for seven years, balancing her responsibilities from the age of 18 while also pursuing her graduate studies. She attended Princeton University, staying close to her family’s operations, and even continued to oversee the business remotely while working towards her Ph.D. at Caltech. "I handled all customer calls, billing, and inspections because I was the one who spoke English," Li recounted, emphasizing how this experience instilled in her a deep-seated resilience. This principle, she notes, remains a guiding force in her scientific career. "Science is a non-linear journey that requires perseverance. As an immigrant, you naturally learn to adapt and be resilient." At World Labs, Li is setting her sights high, focusing on the development of world models—AI systems that utilize spatial intelligence. She explains that this capability allows AI to comprehend and interact with the environment, building on the foundation laid by visual intelligence. Many experts in the AI field believe that these world models represent the next significant leap in artificial intelligence. Li argues that while current large-language models have their merits, they are inherently limited compared to the potential of world models. Drawing parallels to her past work with ImageNet, she highlights the importance of visual information as a stepping stone toward actionable understanding of the world. Connecting her scientific pursuits to her immigrant background, Li reflects, "I was always a curious child, and science provided an outlet for that curiosity. I found my passion in science, not in nightlife or other distractions." Her story is a testament to the power of resilience and curiosity in shaping a successful career in technology.
