I knew nothing about business or medicine, but my life-threatening allergies drove me to build a healthcare startup with nearly $1 million in annual recurring revenue

At just 27 years old, Zak Marks has turned his personal struggles with severe allergies into a thriving healthcare startup, Kitt Medical, which boasts an impressive $998,000 in annual recurring revenue. The company specializes in providing wall-mounted emergency kits specifically designed for allergic reactions. Marks' journey began in childhood when a seemingly innocent snack led to a life-altering experience. After a friend’s mother used the same knife for both butter and peanut butter, Marks suffered a severe allergic reaction that revealed his allergies to tree nuts and legumes. This incident introduced him to adrenaline pens, essential for managing potential anaphylactic reactions, although he initially felt overwhelmed and unprepared. As he grew older, Marks struggled with the practicality of carrying his adrenaline pen, especially during his university years. In his final year of product design studies, he was encouraged to create something meaningful. Rather than redesigning the pen itself—a task he felt was beyond his engineering skills—he began to explore ways to enhance the existing system. This led to the conception of a wall-mounted emergency kit, akin to fire extinguishers and defibrillators, aimed at increasing accessibility and awareness of allergy management. The concept evolved into a portable kit designed to hold adrenaline pens and facilitate rapid response during allergic emergencies. Marks envisioned a future where these kits would be standard in schools, workplaces, and public venues, enabling trained staff to respond effectively to allergic reactions. Recognizing his limitations in medical knowledge and business acumen, Marks sought a cofounder and was fortunate to connect with James Cohen, who had a background in sales and operations. Together, they secured £100,000 from friends and family in 2021, allowing them to focus on marketing, prototypes, and manufacturing. Navigating regulatory requirements was crucial for Kitt Medical, particularly since their kits would include adrenaline pens. They engaged a regulatory affairs consultant to ensure compliance and were placed on a waitlist for the necessary licenses. With expert guidance, they piloted their kits in schools and, in late 2022, successfully raised additional funds through grants and competitions, enabling further expansion. By 2023, Kitt Medical had developed functioning software and obtained a license to distribute medication, allowing them to provide schools with updated kits equipped with fresh adrenaline pens each year. Their strategy also shifted toward supplying businesses in the UK that have occupational health plans, opening up new avenues for growth. As Kitt Medical continues to scale, Marks takes pride in the impact of their work, reporting that their kits have already been used to address 17 life-threatening allergic reactions. Looking back, he reflects on his unexpected journey into entrepreneurship, motivated by a desire to solve a problem that has personally affected him. Marks emphasizes the importance of collaboration and seeking help when needed, showcasing his commitment to making a meaningful difference in the world of allergy care.
