Humans intervened every 9 minutes in AAA test of driver assists

Recent testing of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) has revealed significant challenges in their effectiveness. These systems, designed to enhance vehicle safety and convenience, include features like blind spot monitoring, collision warnings, and emergency braking. While they aim to act as a supplementary set of eyes and ears for drivers, the reality is more complex. Among the newer technologies is the traffic jam assist, which combines adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping capabilities to manage low-speed traffic. However, this system falls under the 'level 2' category, meaning that drivers must remain attentive and ready to take control. More advanced 'level 3' systems do exist, allowing drivers to disengage from driving tasks altogether, but they were not the focus of this study. AAA conducted a thorough evaluation of five different ADAS systems in the congested traffic of Los Angeles. The tests involved covering an average of 342 miles over 16.2 hours during both morning and afternoon rush hours, using cameras and GPS to track vehicle performance and traffic conditions. One key objective was to assess how well these systems could function in real-world scenarios. The results were telling: on average, drivers found themselves needing to intervene every 9.1 minutes, or approximately every 3.2 miles. Alarmingly, 85 percent of the notable events recorded by the data capture systems necessitated driver intervention, indicating that these systems often fall short of their intended purpose. Ultimately, the findings underscore the ongoing need for drivers to remain engaged, even with the latest automotive technologies.
