French police search X office in Paris, summons Elon Musk for questioning

In a significant move, French police, in collaboration with Europol, conducted a search of X's office in Paris, as announced by the Paris prosecutor’s office on Tuesday. This operation is part of a broader investigation that began in 2025, focusing on allegations regarding the 'fraudulent extraction of data' from an automated data processing system by an organized group. The cybercrime unit of the French prosecutors has revealed that the scope of the investigation has expanded to include other serious allegations. These include complicity in the possession and distribution of child sexual abuse material, violations of privacy, and Holocaust denial. This intensification of scrutiny comes at a time when X, under the ownership of Elon Musk, is facing backlash for the misuse of its Grok AI, which has been implicated in generating non-consensual imagery, including child abuse material, involving individuals on the platform. Musk, who acquired X—formerly known as Twitter—in 2022, along with former CEO Linda Yaccarino, has been summoned for questioning scheduled for April 20. Additionally, several unnamed staff members from X have also been called in for inquiries. While neither X nor representatives from eMed, where Yaccarino currently serves as CEO, responded to requests for comments from TechCrunch, a spokesperson for the Paris prosecutor’s office, Maylis De Roeck, confirmed the raid. According to her statement, the Public Prosecutor’s Office aims to ensure that X adheres to French laws, given its operational presence within the country.
