Mistral, a prominent AI startup from France, is reportedly in discussions to secure up to $1 billion in equity funding. This potential investment involves notable backers, including the Abu Dhabi-based MGX fund, as indicated by sources cited by Bloomberg. In addition to equity, Mistral is also exploring options for debt financing, engaging with French financial institutions such as Bpifrance SACA to raise substantial amounts in euros, according to the same report. The company, known for its Le Chat chatbot, stands out as a key player within the European AI sector, particularly with its commitment to developing open-weight large language models (LLMs). To date, Mistral has successfully raised a total of $1.19 billion, achieving a post-money valuation of $6.51 billion, as per PitchBook data. The startup's latest fundraising round was a Series B completed in June 2024. Mistral is currently collaborating with MGX – a government-supported AI fund worth $100 billion – alongside Nvidia, to establish Europe’s largest AI data center campus. This initiative aligns with the UAE's pledge to invest €50 billion in AI projects in France, part of President Emmanuel Macron's strategy to enhance France's position in AI sovereignty.
