Fractal Analytics’ muted IPO debut signals persistent AI fears in India

Fractal Analytics, India’s inaugural AI company to go public, experienced a challenging debut on the stock market, reflecting investor apprehension following a significant sell-off in the Indian software sector. On its first trading day, Fractal’s shares opened at ₹876, below the initial offer price of ₹900, and continued to decline throughout the day. The stock ultimately closed at ₹873.70, representing a 7% drop and giving the company a market valuation of approximately ₹148.1 billion (around $1.6 billion). This valuation is a notable decrease from Fractal's peak in private markets. In July 2025, the company secured around $170 million in a secondary offering, achieving a valuation of $2.4 billion. Having first surpassed the $1 billion milestone in January 2022 with a $360 million investment from TPG, Fractal became the first AI unicorn in India. The launch of Fractal’s IPO occurs at a time when India is striving to establish itself as a pivotal player in the AI landscape, aiming to draw investment interest from major global AI firms. Companies like OpenAI and Anthropic are increasingly collaborating with the Indian government, businesses, and the developer community to leverage the nation’s vast talent pool and burgeoning demand for AI technologies. This week, New Delhi is hosting the AI Impact Summit, which unites global tech leaders and policymakers to explore these developments. Fractal’s muted market entry follows a strategic adjustment to its IPO plans. In February, the company opted for a more conservative pricing strategy, reducing the IPO size by over 40% from ₹49 billion ($540.3 million) to ₹28.34 billion (approximately $312.5 million) based on advice from its bankers. Established in 2000, Fractal specializes in AI and data analytics software, primarily serving large enterprises in sectors such as financial services, retail, and healthcare. The majority of its revenue is generated from international markets, particularly the U.S. In 2022, Fractal transitioned from its traditional data analytics roots to focus on AI. Its IPO documentation highlighted a strong business trajectory, with operational revenue increasing by 26% to ₹27.65 billion (around $304.8 million) for the year ending March 2025, alongside a turnaround to a net profit of ₹2.21 billion ($24.3 million) from a previous loss of ₹547 million ($6 million). Proceeds from the IPO are earmarked for debt repayment at its U.S. subsidiary, research and development, enhanced sales and marketing efforts through its Fractal Alpha division, office expansion in India, and potential acquisitions.
