Foxconn highlights growing AI ambitions at 'Tech Day' as it grows beyond iPhone assembler identity

During its annual Hon Hai Tech Day in Taiwan, Foxconn, officially known as Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., highlighted its ambitions in the artificial intelligence sector. The company, recognized as the leading assembler of Apple's iPhones, is striving to transform its identity and establish itself as a key player in the AI hardware market. The event coincided with the announcement of a partnership with OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT. OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, participated via video message, emphasizing the collaboration's goal of sharing insights into the evolving hardware demands across the AI industry. Altman noted that Foxconn would leverage this knowledge to develop and prototype new equipment, aiming for production within the United States. This partnership is particularly significant as Foxconn's server business has recently emerged as its top revenue source, contributing to record profits in the latest quarter. According to Kirk Yang, an adjunct finance professor at National Taiwan University, the alliance between Foxconn and OpenAI is natural, given OpenAI's need for reliable manufacturing partners to expedite product launches. In addition to its collaboration with OpenAI, Foxconn announced a joint effort with Intrinsic, a subsidiary of Alphabet, to create what are being termed 'artificial intelligence factories.' The Taiwanese giant also showcased its partnership with Nvidia, revealing compute trays designed for Nvidia's advanced Blackwell chips. Alexis Bjorlin, vice president of Nvidia's DGX Cloud, stated that the collaboration aims to enhance the deployment of cutting-edge AI infrastructure to meet surging customer demand. With the demand for AI hardware skyrocketing this year, Nvidia recently exceeded third-quarter expectations and issued a promising outlook for the upcoming quarter. However, concerns linger in the market regarding a potential AI bubble and the sustainability of current AI-related expenditures. In discussions with CNBC, Foxconn Chairman Young Liu expressed optimism about the company’s resilience against such market fluctuations. He stated, "Regardless of which AI models or players prevail, they will all require hardware. Similarly, all GPU manufacturers will need system and component suppliers to support their needs."
